Standardization of Nubian Levallois Technology in Dhofar, Southern Arabia

چکیده
The characteristics and distribution of “Nubian" Levallois technology have been prominent in recent discussions Middle Palaeolithic/Middle Stone Age technological variability its implications. Here we explore Nubian by focusing on the relative “standardization” TH.69 assemblage from western Dhofar, one most “Nubian” all assemblages. Aspects evaluated include shape cores dorsal surface preparation patterns. We found that some ways – such as overall reduction method, coefficients variation for various features core does demonstrate standardization. Yet, others, precise way which convexity was prepared, is rather less standardized. Our findings highlight complexity defining operationalizing concept On balance, argue relatively standardized reduction, yet wider meaning this not clear.

The Nubian Complex of Dhofar, Oman: An African Middle Stone Age Industry in Southern Arabia
Despite the numerous studies proposing early human population expansions from Africa into Arabia during the Late Pleistocene, no archaeological sites have yet been discovered in Arabia that resemble a specific African industry, which would indicate demographic exchange across the Red Sea. Here we report the discovery of a buried site and more than 100 new surface scatters in the Dhofar region o...
متن کاملA Nubian Complex Site from Central Arabia: Implications for Levallois Taxonomy and Human Dispersals during the Upper Pleistocene
Archaeological survey undertaken in central Saudi Arabia has revealed 29 surface sites attributed to the Arabian Middle Paleolithic based on the presence of Levallois blank production methods. Technological analyses on cores retrieved from Al-Kharj 22 have revealed specific reduction modalities used to produce flakes with predetermined shapes. The identified modalities, which are anchored withi...
متن کاملConstraints on Levallois Core Technology: A Mathematical Model
Recent volumetric definitions of Levallois core technology are amenable to mathematical modelling. We present a simple geometric model that permits controlled manipulation of a few of the key parameters defining Levallois core morphology. The models indicate that Levallois cores are relatively efficient at minimizing raw material waste while at the same time maximizing productivity in terms of ...
متن کاملStandardization in Technology-Based Markets
The complexity of modern technology, especially its system character, has led to an increase the number and variety of standards that affect a single industry or market. Standards affect the R&D, production, and market penetration stages of economic activity and therefore have a significant collective effect on innovation, productivity, and market structure. Standards are classified into produc...
متن کاملPopulation structure of woody plants in the arid cloud forests of Dhofar, southern Oman
This study evaluates the size frequency distribution of 11 trees and shrubs in the cloud forest in Wadi Garziz, southern Oman, in order to assess their current situation, which is affected by cutting, overgrazing and other constraints. A size class distribution and a vegetation structure analysis were applied in order to analyze the dynamics of this forest using census data from 51 plots select...
